The Antwerp Maritime Academy is participating in Erasmus, the higher education action of the EU Lifelong Learning programme. It seeks to enhance the quality and reinforce the European dimension of higher education by encouraging transnational cooperation between universities, boosting European mobility and improving the transparency and full academic recognition of studies and qualifications throughout the European Union.
Erasmus consists of many different activities, such as student and teacher exchanges, joint development of study programmes, etc.
The academy was participating in international projects where its know-how can be used to develop maritime education and training.
In this respect contacts have been made with the port authorities in Dubai and with education authorities in Suriname.
However, the most visible involvement so far is in Cambodia.
The academy is Leading Partner in two projects aimed at establishing maritime education and training by setting up a Maritime Navigation Department as a part of the future Cambodia Maritime Academy.
In 2003 the first project was successfully concluded. It examined the use of distance learning, and more particularly e-learning. The project was sponsored by the European Commission, under its Asia IT&C programme.
More information on this project can be found here: E-tools for Off Shore Training of Maritime Personnel.
The second project, sponsored by the Asia-Link programme of the European Commission, was started in September 2004 and ended on 31 August 2007.
The project involves the training of Cambodian instructors, the development of a curriculum and teaching methodology, the operational set-up of a navigation department, etc.
More information on this project can be found here: Definition of the Curriculum and Training of All Instructors for the Start-up of a New and Full Cycle of Maritime Navigation Training and Education in Cambodia.
