Highlights from Manila

One of the most exciting events in 2018 was the IMLA25-IMEC30-ICERS14 joint international conference held in October in Manila, Philippines. Alison Noble, Ludwina Van Son, Christophe Collard and Pieter Decancq attended the IMLA-International Maritime English Conference (IMEC30), all four presenting separate papers. Filip Van Gutte attended IMLA-International Conference on Engine Room Simulators (ICERS14). The event was hosted at the Diamond Hotel in Manila by Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP). The conference concluded with a trip across Manila Bay to Bataan, where the academy is located. The Philippines supplies 1/3 of the world’s seafarers and the opportunity to meet Filipino cadets and visit the training facilities at MAAP was much appreciated by conference delegates.

During the conference it was announced that Alison Noble would be taking over from Prof. Clive Cole (ret’d), World Maritime University, as Chair of IMLA-International Maritime English Conference following his retirement from the post in October 2019. The conference report and proceedings, including the papers presented by HZS personnel, will shortly be available on the IMLA-IMEC website (http://www.imla.co/imec/).
